Abstract

SPK was the most frequent method of pancreas transplantation in the US, accounting for 72% of all pancreas transplantations. The number of annual SPK recipients has been consistent over the past 10 years; however, there was an increase in the proportion of recipients with type 2 diabetes. The mean age of recipients has been increasing year by year, whereas the mean age of donors has been decreasing. In contrast to observations for diabetic patients without transplantation, the incidence of cardiovascular death in type 2 diabetic recipients was not higher than type 1 diabetic recipients, whereas infectious death was more common in type 2 diabetic recipients. CKD staging at discharge is an important predictor, not only for kidney graft outcome, but also for pancreas graft outcome. Pancreas graft survival in the CKD stage 3 group, which was the main group of SPK, was similar to those in higher renal function groups, whereas their kidney graft survival rates were different.
