Marvin Mecwan, Postdoctoral Researcher

Dr. Marvin Mecwan is a postdoctoral researcher in personalized biomaterials at the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation (TIBI). Marvin received their PhD in bioengineering at the University of Washington (September 2019) where they mainly focused on preparing and studying non-fouling surfaces for blood-contacting medical devices, as well as assessing how blood proteins interact with biomaterial surfaces. As a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington, they were involved in evaluating a polyurethane based sphere-templated scaffold for use as an arteriovenous (AV) graft for hemodialysis. They are highly skilled in polymer synthesis, scaffold fabrication, surface analyses, protein-surface interactions as well as host-biomaterial interactions. At TIBI, Dr. Mecwan plans on exploring human biology and exploiting precise biological recognition mechanisms in order to develop new biomaterials that can be engineered to repair and regenerate tissue. Additionally, they are extremely interested in translating medical technologies and have startup experience, both as a CEO (Z-ion+ Technologies) as well as a scientific product manager (BioDLogics, LLC).
