Letter from the Chairman

Hello everyone,

These are difficult times indeed. There is much suffering going on in the world secondary to the Covid-19 virus, with illness and pre-mature death. In addition, many people have lost their livelihoods and are being forced to isolate themselves.

Out of necessity, we find ourselves turning to science for a long term solution. Hopefully there will be a cure or a vaccine for the virus. There are many promising candidates, but at times the solution seems far away.

Our research lab, the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation, will hopefully be able to contribute toward a cure or a vaccine. We also strive to solve other medical diseases and conditions, which have unfortunately largely been put on hold by this virus.

We have a new Director of Research and CEO of our Institute, Dr. Ali Khademhosseini. Dr. Khademhosseini comes to us from UCLA, Harvard and MIT. He has had a stellar career in biomedical research. His interests lie in tissue engineering, tissue regeneration, bio-fabrication using 3D printing, nanotechnology, stem cell treatment, and creation of organs-on-a-chip. We will be striving to make advances in personalized medicine - specific cures for the individual.

Dr. Khademhosseini is currently assembling his research team, as well arranging for post-doctoral researchers and fellowships. It is certainly an exciting time. He is a tireless worker, and able to really motivate all those around him.

My father started the Terasaki Institute in hopes of making impactful discoveries in medicine. His research was in organ transplantation, arguably the first example of personalized medicine. We believe our Institute will continue to add significant discoveries in the treatment of human disease.

So it’s time for everyone to stay safe, and hunker down if necessary. Hopefully, science will come through and we will have a cure or vaccine for the Covid virus, and we can all return to a more normal life.

Chairman of the Board
