CEO's Corner

  CEO's Corner

I am excited to officially join the Terasaki Institute full time, after spending the past year working at Amazon. My time there was inspirational and educational in seeing how a successful company, like Amazon, operates.

Amazon has a culture set by trusting its workforce to encourage each other to excel and focus on big problems. This culture has been developed by implementing a set of leadership principles that help foster a fast-paced and aspiring environment that is scalable from small teams to their large enterprise of more than a million people. At the Terasaki Institute, we have also developed a set of Leadership Principles, adapted from Amazon, as I feel it is essential for recruiting and evaluating the performance of employees. These principles inspire and support an environment that appreciates solving real-world problems.

Our work not only reflects our Leadership Principles but is also inspired by Dr. Terasaki’s legacy, who developed one of the first personalized therapeutics. We strive to continue this legacy by creating the future of personalized health by integrating various state-of-the-art technologies as we tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems. We aim to create individualized approaches through a comprehensive, interdisciplinary model by bringing together experts from biology, chemistry, engineering, clinical medicine, and business development. This integrative effort will identify important problems, encourage innovative solutions, and cultivate a culture and value of interdisciplinary work in the next generation of scientists and engineers.

We are building goal-oriented research teams that focused on making the greatest impact by inventing and translating technology platforms to enhance the health of patients. As a critical aspect of this translation, we are also developing an innovation ecosystem with startup company incubator and accelerator programs to help foster companies' early stages.

By integrating my experience at Amazon with my previous academic experience at Harvard, MIT, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and UCLA as well as my entrepreneurial experience, I am excited to lead the Institute to develop personalized health solutions.
