Why Innovation is Critical to the Institute’s Ability to have Impact

The Terasaki Institute occupies a unique place in the world of research institutions. We combine the rigor of academic research with the agility of private sector enterprises in a mission to translate our innovation into products that matter to patients. Our research platforms are interdisciplinary, and we practice “convergent science” which enables us to combine disciplines and platforms to solve often intractable and impactful problems with freedoms often difficult to achieve in academic institutions. For example, much of our work lays at the intersect of engineering and medicine, two areas that are rarely combined in normal academic institutions. Visible Hydrogels for Rapid Hemorrhage Control and Monitoring

There are many different events which may lead to excessive and uncontrolled bleeding within the body. This can occur as a result of inflammation and ulcerations, abnormalities in the blood vessels or trauma-related injuries. READ MORE

Covid-19 Vaccine Recent Developments and Recommendations for Transplant Patients

At TIBI and at Transplant Research and Education Center (TREC), we believe that rapid communication of information about COVID-19 vaccination to transplant patients and ongoing monitoring of patient outcomes are two important ways to keep patients safe as we move forward into 2021.  READ MORE

Many of the biggest problems our society faces are interconnected, from health care to climate change to sustainability. We know that every individual is unique and that lifestyle and environment directly impact their health - from where they live and work, to the food options they have access to.  READ MORE

Upcoming Terasaki Talks

Friday, January 27th

Join our next Terasaki Talk seminar with Mark Post, MD, Ph.D.,
"Converting Medical Tissue Engineering into Food Production".

The need for animal-component free culture of cells and tissues, abstinence of antibiotics and, for some consumers, genetic modification severely limit the solution-space available to developers of cultivated meat. At the same time, consumers are increasingly willing to accept alternative sources of meat, giving the field an appreciable tailwind. Given the huge potential for improvement and extension of applied tissue engineering for food, this will be a scientific endeavor for the next couple of decades.
